Hamlet 2

Released: 2008

What is it about?

A high school drama teacher (Steve Coogan), trying to save his department that is about to be cut, stages an elaborate production of his own play, HAMLET 2.

Who made it?

Director and co-writer Andrew Fleming previously directed THE CRAFT, DICK, and NANCY DREW.

His co-writer, Pam Brady, has worked on SOUTH PARK as well as the underrated sitcom THE LOOP.

Is it any good?

One of the most depressing things about American pop culture is how little known British comedian Steve Coogan is in this country (most recently seen as the director in TROPIC THUNDER). He is one of the funniest men, one of the most versatile actors, out there. Think of Ricky Gervais, or Sacha Baron Cohen. He is at their level. Yet, few know of him.

In HAMLET 2, his character is nothing like his previous creations, Alan Partridge, or Tommy Saxondale. It is closer to something Martin Short would have played in the 1980’s.

And, he is hysterical playing him.

The first part of the film is rather hit and miss as Coogan and his class (with the help of Elisabeth Shue, as herself) prepare for the big school play, and fighting the administration in the process.

But that finale, it is worth seeing the film alone for.

To give you an idea of the play they created, it features the song “Rock Me Sexy Jesus” (that may be a bit too close to “Little Shop of Horrors” for comfort). Not only does Jesus walk on water, but he moonwalks on water. All while telling kids not to smoke.

There is a moment, when Jesus and Hamlet step out of the time machine, as the Gay Men’s Chorus of Tucson sings Elton John, that is so absurdly brilliant, you have to love this film.

Will this make Coogan the star he deserves to be? I doubt it. I really don’t think box office for this will be what it should, especially as it is being released on the last weekend of August.

Someday though.
